Allen Iverson to play basketball in Philadelphia as part of BIG3 tournament
Iverson will be one of 40 players in the event, and 76ers legend Julius Erving will be one of the coaches.
The BIG3 touring basketball league of former NBA players will visit the Wells Fargo Center on July 16, bringing Allen Iverson back to the arena where he starred for the 76ers.
Iverson will be one of 40 players in the event, with each of the eight teams getting five players to rotate in three-on-three games. He will be a player-coach for his squad, alongside former NBA journeyman forward DerMarr Johnson and other players to be named.
Iverson won't be the only Philadelphia basketball legend in the event. Julius Erving will be one of the coaches.
So far, the team rosters are:
3's Company: Co-captains Allen Iverson (player-coach) and DerMarr Johnson
Tri-State: Co-captains Jermaine O'Neal and Bonzi Wells, coach Julius Erving
Three-Headed Monsters: Co-captains Rashard Lewis and Jason Williams, coach Gary Payton
Killer 3s: Co-captains Chauncey Billups and Stephen Jackson, player-coach Charles Oakley
Ghost Ballers: Co-captains Mike Bibby and Ricky Davis, coach George Gervin
Trilogy: Co-captains Kenyon Martin and Al Harrington, coach Rick Mahorn
Power: Co-captains Corey Maggette and Cuttino Mobley, coach Clyde Drexler
Ball Hogs: Co-captain Brian Scalabrine, coach Rick Barry
Tournament organizers said some 70 other former players are competing for the 24 remaining sports. Among those known to be trying to get in are Philly native Hakim Warrick, former 76er Larry Hughes, and big names such as Latrell Sprewell, Steve Francis, Etan Thomas and J.R. Rider.
Tickets will go on sale May 6.
Philadelphia will be the fourth stop of 10 on the tour. The first is the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on June 25. That's the only other stop in the Northeast. After the "regular season" ends on Aug. 13 in Los Angeles, the playoffs will be held on Aug. 20 in Seattle, which should be quite a scene with Payton going back to the city where he became a star. The title game will be played on Las Vegas on Aug. 26.
