Cupid, of 'The Cupid Shuffle' fame, is playing the Sixers halftime show Saturday
R&B singer Cupid easily created one of the most iconic line dances of all time: 2007's "The Cupid Shuffle." No wedding, cookout, block party or turn up is set without it. The 35-year-old Louisiana crooner is coming to Philly this Saturday to perform during halftime of the Sixers game against the Pacers. We spoke to him about Philly, line dance culture and the "Milly Rock."
Why do you think the Cupid Shuffle resonates with so many people ?
It was made with no intention to have any genre, just to bring people together and move in unity. It doesn't have a face or a color. It's just a great song. Whether you like country or hip hop, they all come together.
Do you ever grow tired of performing it?
So they play cupid shuffle at an event, what do you do?
[Laughs] Funny you said that, just a couple of weeks ago, I was at a bar and the band bust out singing it. I critique it a little. I heard a few good versions and bad versions. You can't miss the notes. [Laughs] Any time they know I'm in the building they're gonna let me sing. So I let them do their thing.
Philly seems to have a special relationship with "The Cupids Shuffle."
There's a lot of big line dance groups in Philly and they line dance in LOVE Park on the weekends. I'm really trying to take a photo in front of LOVE Park because of that.
It's actually closed right now.
Aw, man, really?
Seems like you've been Inducted into the line dance culture.
Yeah, Cupids Shuffle is considered a beginner line dance. They have line dances for every song that plays on the radio. They can get very complex.
What's your favorite line dance that isn't yours?
Are there any new dances you like out now?
What can we expect during your halftime performance on Saturday?
