A man who police believe to be mentally-ill was hospitalized Tuesday night after a police officer shot him during a struggle with cops in South Philly.
About 6:30 p.m., cops responded to a call of a disturbance on Bouvier Street near Shunk, police said. When they arrived, they found a scantily-clad man acting erratically in a neighbor's yard, said a police source.
Officers tried to subdue the man, but he lunged at one of them and tried to wrestle her firearm away from her, police said. An officer then sprayed the man with pepper spray, but the man continued to struggle, police said.
Another officer fired once at the suspect, striking him in the abdomen. He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he's listed in stable condition.
An officer was also taken to HUP to be treated for a reaction to the spray. *
