A Montgomery County man has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting deaths of his mother and her boyfriend, the District Attorney's office announced Wednesday.

Joshua Trunk, 19, of Ambler, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, possessing instruments of a crime, and firearms violations in the deaths of Janice Trunk, 54, and Kevin Milton Smith, 44, on July 31. He has been held on drug charges at the Montgomery County jail since the night of the murders, according to court documents.

About 11:15 p.m. that night, Ambler police were called to the Forest Garden Apartments for a report of gunshots fired.

While searching for the source of the gunfire, police knocked on apartment doors and evacuated residents. Police entered Janice Trunk's apartment after they heard the television and found the door unlocked.

Inside, police found the victims in the master bedroom. Both had been shot multiple times, and there was no sign of a struggle, according to police.

Family and friends of the victims told police that Joshua Trunk lived with his mother and was known to have a gun, according to the criminal complaint.

Janice Trunk recently had him committed to Eagleville Hospital "because he was becoming paranoid," the complaint said. He signed himself out after a one-week stay.

Shortly after he had been released, Joshua Trunk allegedly told a friend that his mother "had to die," according to the complaint.
