A SEPTA bus collided with a tractor-trailer in Frankford Tuesday morning, sending 17 people to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

About 5:30 a.m., the Route 5 bus traveling north on Frankford Avenue crashed into the tractor-trailer, which was turning onto Frankford from Orthodox Street, SEPTA spokeswoman Heather Redfern said.

Fifteen passengers on the bus were taken to Einstein Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, while the bus driver was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital, also with a non-life-threatening injury, she said. The driver was released from the hospital later Tuesday morning.

City police said a second person was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital with minor injuries. It was not immediately known if that second person was the truck driver.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.

As a result of the accident, detours were expected for the Route 3, 5 and J buses in the area of Frankford Avenue and Orthodox Street. Check SEPTA's system status for more information.
